BIOS

ANGÉLICA CASTELLÓ
recorder player (+ electronic devices, distortions, cheap toys, feedbacks, voices) performer, curator, composer, teacher – was born in mexico city in 1972 and plays recorder from an early age. she studied music in mexico (conservatorio de la ciudad de méxico) montréal (université de montréal), amsterdam (conservatorium van amsterdam) and vienna (konservatorium der stadt wien, institut für elektroakustische musik), city where  she now lives and works since 1999.

she founded the concert series “neue musik in st ruprecht” (www.neue-musik.at), which she currently runs and where regularly musicians from austria and abroad performe.

collaborates with dancers, writers, musicians, video artists, performers, a.o.

she is a founding member of the ensembles low frequency orchestra, los autodisparadores, chesterfield, subshrubs, fiori musicali, frufru and cilantro with whom she frequently performs, as well as collaborating with musicians like burkhard stangl, billy roisz, olga neuwirth, wolfgang mitterer, martin siewert, eva reiter, manrico montero, mario de vega, barbara romen, gunter schneider, juan jose rivas, mamoru okuno, robin Hayward, veryan weston, kazuhisa uchihashi, okkyung lee, matija schellander, Thomas grill john butcher, dieb13, maja osojnik,  and many others with whom she has performed across europe and america.

castelló has work with composers like mario lavista, hilda paredes, katharina klement, daniel de la cuesta, robert kellner, jorge sanchez-chiong, phil niblock, johannes kretz, burkhard stangl etc. on their works, some of which have been dedicate to her.

her music has being played in festivals and important concert series, and has being recorded at labels like “ein_klang records”, “mandorla”, “mikroton records” a.o.

she is also an active improviser often playing for theatre, readings, videos, exhibitions, dance and concerts.

she has performed at important festivals such as: salzburger festspiele (Austria), ulrichsberger kaleidophon (Austria), ), donau festival (krems/austria), radar (mexico)  taktlos (bern), interpenetration (graz), osterfestival (austria), musica genera (poland), lmc festival (london), musikprotokoll (graz), numusik (norway), music unlimited (wells/austria), wien modern, cha’ak’ab paaxil (mexico), klangspuren (austria), kontraste (krems/Austria), a.o. and worked as an artist in residence in schrattenberg (a) and in topolo (i).

CHRISTOF KURZMANN
born in vienna/austria, presently lives in buenos aires.
musician between electropop, improvisation and “new music”. sometimes soloist, he prefers to be part of an collective or an working group. played concerts in all continents with the exception of australia. organizer of various events in the music- and media-genre. labelowner of the small independent label “charhizma” – which at the moment only exists as a plattform to present musicians from around the world in various live settings. conscient objector of military- and civil-service, he still is politicly active and/or interested. he likes to travel, go to the cinemas and concerts, likes to read, even emails and messages. (but he doesn’t reply all the time)

OKKYUNG LEE
after being in music schools from age of 3 to 25, korean cellist/improviser/composer okkyung lee finally found her artistic freedom in new york’s lower east side where she moved in 2000.
since then, she has performed and recorded with numerous artists such as laurie anderson, lotte anker, derek bailey, kjell bjørgeengen, carla bozulich, john butcher, nels cline, chris corsano, sylvie courvoisier, mark dresser, fred frith, carlos giffoni, john hollenbeck, vijay iyer, lindha kallerdahl, andrew lampert, christian marclay, min xiao-fen, thurston moore, ikue mori, lawrence D. “butch” morris, larry ochs, jim o’rourke, evan parker, keith rowe, wadada leo smith, tyshawn sorey, skuli sverrisson, c spencer yeh and john zorn to name a few.
okkyung has released the following albums: her debut album as a leader, Nihm on Tzadik; a duo recording with christian marclay, Rubbings on My Cat is an Alien (LP)/A Silnet place (CD); solo cello album I saw the Ghost of an Unknown Soul and it Said… on thurston moore’s Ecstatic Peace!; Check for Monsters with steve beresford and peter evans on Emanem label. for 2010, she is working on her follow up album on Tzadik, duo recording with phil minton for Dancing Wayang and another duo with adam linson for psi. in may she will also be recording a trio with evan parker and peter evans and also a duo with paul lytton.
in 2009, Kisaeng Becomes You, a multi-media project co-produced and co-choreographed by dean moss and yoon-jin kim,based on the prose of korean courtesans from last centuries. saw its world premier at Dance Thater Workshop, which garnered rave reviews from New York Times and Village Voice and others.
she has received a composer commission from New York State Council on the Arts in 2007 and Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant in 2010.
okkyung holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Film Scoring/Contemporary Writing & Production from Berklee College of Music, and master’s degree in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory of Music.
